Why I am Finally Making New Years Resolutions

I realize it is a bit late to post about New Years resolutions, but I tend to run behind in everything these days. I rarely make resolutions and just try to make the most of each year. However, the days fly by so fast I am afraid I will blink and it will be December again. I don’t want 2018 to be the year where I only cook and clean for the boys in my house. In order to prevent this, I sat down and evaluated what I could add to life that would increase the excitement for the year. I don’t love using the word ‘resolutions’ as it doesn’t seem to really define what I want to accomplish this year. So instead of ‘resolutions’ I will call these goals that I think are reasonable to take on in 2018. I want to make a conscious effort to complete everything on this list. With my current daily routines, if I don’t see my goals in black and white, I don’t think I will ever think about them again. So here goes!

1. Be Present.

If I have a free minute, I jump on my phone and try to check Instagram, email or texts. This happens all day long. I need to set aside designated time to focus on social media, etc. and then when I have down time with my husband or baby, I want to be present and not miss the little moments of life. Time flies by and I don’t want to look back and realize I spent too much time staring at my phone. My husband is on a million group texts and I swear they have nothing else to do except message each other back and forth. It drives me crazy. Hopefully my efforts to be more present will rub off on him.

2. House Projects.

I have many, but I will elaborate on a few. We have been talking about buying new patio furniture forever. We have lived in this house for almost 6 years! That’s so long. Another year cannot go by without finishing the pool and patio area. I also have been trying to put a photo album together for years. I received the nicest album as a wedding gift and it has sat on my desk for too many years. Ugh! I did print out 300+ pictures so now I just need to find time to sit down and organize everything.

3. Start a new Hobby.

This one is difficult. There are so many things I love and want to jump into. The top contenders here are: (1) take up piano again or (2) get back into Rosetto Stone French lessons. Neither of these will be easy to fit into the day with a baby, but I will give it my best effort.

4. Travel.

I have not been on a real vacation in almost two years. That is unacceptable. I love seeing new places! I don’t understand how this happened. Even if it’s only a long weekend, we will travel somewhere new this year and take a vacation. A few places I really want to go are: Scotland (this goes back to my Outlander obsession), Nashville, Quebec, Alaska and Napa. I have been to Napa before, but who doesn’t want to visit a land of wineries again?

5. Actually Read Books.

I used to read so much when I was younger. I was that person who would go through ten books a month and not blink an eye (this was when I was still in middle school). Since college, I haven’t found myself digging into novels the way I used to. A lot of it is due to lack of time and also not even knowing where to start with all the amazing books available! All my free time now is spent researching blog issues and trying to figure out better ways to utilize Instagram. Hopefully by the end of 2018 I will have remedied this issue.

What are some goals you are setting for 2018?

I love making goals (and lists!) too! If you go back to learning French, check out the Pimsleur French app—much more busy-mom friendly than Rosetta 🙂

I love lists!! I will have to check that out! We are one month into the year and I haven’t done of these things yet. I have to get started.
