5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging

I apologize I have been somewhat absent this month. I started working part time again, which I love, but it’s left me slightly behind on my blog. Between working, cooking and trying to do activities with my little guy, I have no spare time left at the end of the day!

I have been wanting to do this post for a long time now. There are so many topics to cover about blogging, but I wanted to start by sharing 5 things I wish I knew before starting blogging. Today felt like the right day to put it together. I am in no way trying to talk anyone out of blogging, but I know I saw the whole industry through rose-colored glasses before I started. For anyone thinking about beginning blogging or trying to be an influencer, I hope this gives you some insight!

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging – It’s Time Consuming

I first wanted to be a fashion blogger after seeing some popular bloggers wearing some amazing outfits in their posts. It seemed like so much fun and they were advertising items they would wear anyway. It also seemed like all they did was drink champagne at every meal and look fabulous. While I still follow a few of the big fashion bloggers (my favorite is this girl ) I now realize how hard they worked to get to this level! It looks so easy in their Instagram pictures or in their blog posts. I have learned it is the opposite of easy! None of us wakes up with our makeup and hair camera ready. Amazing walls and backdrops don’t just pop up when you walk down the street. For some reason my camera man hasn’t shown up to my house yet. The list of problems goes on.

I had no idea how much time you have to put into blogging to get anywhere. It’s insane. I started my blog when I was pregnant and thought it would be something fun and easy to keep me occupied here and there. It is fun, but that’s it.  No one told me I would have to learn coding, SEO, photo editing or be a location scout. I envisioned myself writing fun posts and taking pictures of clothes all the time. While that is part of it, it’s definitely not the bulk of what goes into blogging. I had to buy the ‘WordPress for Dummies‘ book and then googled every single question I had on coding. There is so much learn. I am pretty sure colleges could have a whole class on blogging basics.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging – Just Because it Exists, Does not Mean Anyone See its

I remember publishing my first few posts and being so proud that I managed to have something of my own on the internet. My posts were on the internet, but I think 3 people saw them. It was super frustrating. I spent countless hours figuring out my blog, it was functioning and I managed to include shopping links for all my readers! Turns out – no one read it or even knew it existed. So so sad. I am by no means popular on the internet now, but at least more than 3 people seem to open my blog emails these days. Thank you by the way! There are a few ways to help get your blog noticed and I am still working through them as it’s a learning experience. Pinterest is probably the best though! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging – Don’t Expect Tons of Free Product

If you don’t enjoy this, do not do it to maybe get free product or get paid. It does not work that way. After time, it is possible to get product exchanges for blog or Instagram posts. It takes a while to get paid and even then, the offers are usually not worth it or are few and far between. There’s always affiliates links, but I don’t know anyone quitting their day jobs to live off of their affiliate commissions. That’s not to say it’s impossible. I know lots of girls who have been successful at landing paid contracts with companies and are sitting in their pajamas 5 days a week working on their blogs/Instagram. Again, this just takes time. I have found that the people who do this only to get paid don’t end up having any fun with it though.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging – Everyone and Their Mom is a Blogger

The blogging field is so so saturated – especially in the fashion world. There are so many amazing girls posting gorgeous photos on Instagram. Some have blogs and some don’t, but it seems the competition is fierce. However, I have made some amazing blogger friends and find that they are the most supportive girls in the world! The only problem with so many talented girls doing the exact same thing is I find myself getting caught in the ‘comparison’ game. This is the worst thing to do! No one is in the same situation as me and no one has the exact same style. Also – no one’s pictures are 100% real. Everything is staged (except for my mommy bloggers out there who post real life shots). I keep trying to stop comparing, but it is hard.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Blogging – Instagram is not my Friend

Most people who blog are also on Instagram. I know a lot of new ‘influencers’ on Instagram don’t have blogs anymore so it doesn’t always go both ways. Instagram seems to always be a challenge – at least for me. The algorithm is constantly changing. Apparently only 7% of your followers actually see your post. You have to spend at least a couple hours a day on it in order to actually grow your account. Then you have the whole ‘follow/unfollow’ game. I don’t know why people do this. It makes no sense to me. If everyone who actually followed me had not unfollowed me – I would have probably close to 15k followers at this point. This is just another challenge for those of us who have recently entered the blogging/influencer world, but with enough work we can get through!

In case you are wondering, I have felt really frustrated with blogging/Instagram lately, which is why I wanted to put this post together. It’s still fun and I love taking pictures of my clothes so I won’t quit! I just had to vent a little and share some thoughts.

Thank you for stopping by!
